SUMMARY

Nexamp is seeking an experienced engineer and leader for a Director, Grid Integration Engineering. In this role you will be responsible for leading Nexamp’s world-class interconnection engineering team and leading the interconnection of Nexamp’s 1GW pipeline of solar and energy projects. You will work closely with electric distribution utilities across the United States and will be responsible for driving predictable, timely, and consistent project execution and providing in-house technical expertise in the interconnection of distributed energy resources (DERs). This role requires an electrical engineer with experience managing DER projects through multiple distribution utility and RTO interconnection processes. You will closely support Nexamp’s Business Development team and serve as the technical lead for policy and regulatory engagement. The Director of Grid Integration Engineering will report to the Vice President of Grid Integration.   

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead a multi-level national team of interconnection engineers and interconnection coordinators designing and managing a portfolio of utility interconnection applications from initial submission through project closeout across multiple states and markets. 
  • Own and lead all aspects of the interconnection process for community solar, storage, and utility-scale DERs to the distribution system, including pre-screen applications, impact studies, facility studies, cluster studies, ISO transmission studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and final project close-out and PTO/ATI. 
  • Develop department SOPs, workflows, design standards and internal processes as well as managing relationships with internal customers and external resources. 
  • Independently set priorities, allocate resources, and make complex technical and commercial decisions, elevating to senior management when necessary. 
  • Provide strategic, market, commercial and technical input to the Development, Engineering and Construction teams regarding the development, design, grid integration, and interconnection of the company's project pipeline. 
  • Initiate utility dispute proceedings and engage with utility leadership to manage utility performance to tariff deadlines 
  • Lead the interconnection team in technical utility negotiations and drive implementation of non-wires alternatives, selective curtailment, Active Resource Management, and other grid-edge technologies. 
  • Represent Nexamp and actively participate at utility and ISO/RTO technical policy stakeholder meetings, working groups and renewable trade groups, including MA TSRG and NY ITWG. 
  • Manage the department strategy for enabling Nexamp’s growth through resource planning, hiring, and 3rd party engineering support including consultants performing load-flow, flicker, and other power system studies. 
  • Leading a culture of operational excellence including workforce management, setting performance goals, identifying training/development needs, providing timely coaching and feedback, and ensuring effective achievement of organizational goals. 
  • Manage and train junior engineers in performing electrical designs as well as reviewing and analyzing utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, and ISAs. 
  • Support VP of Grid Integration in the development and implementation of tactical and strategic action plans related to interconnection project execution. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6+ years of distribution utility or interconnection experience required.
  • 3+ years of direct experience in DER interconnection required.
  • 2+ years of management experience required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering required with an emphasis on Power Systems preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of distribution interconnection processes for relevant states required. Working knowledge of FERC and ISO-level interconnection processes required.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standard design codes such as National Electric Code, International Building Code, International Fire Code and other industry standards required.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical principles, including medium voltage distribution, protection system coordination and relaying principles required.
  • Strong knowledge of the applicable utility tariffs, governing policies, and regulatory frameworks across multiple states required.
  • Proven track record of advancing projects through all development stages.
  • Keen ability to build and maintain relationships with key interconnection counterparts (utilities, ISO/RTOs, etc.).
  • PE license or ability to obtain same preferred.
  • AutoCAD software proficiency preferred.
  • ETAP, PSSE, Aspen, PSCAD, or PSLF modeling experience preferred.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30%.
