DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS

 

City of Waukesha, Wisconsin (71,158). An award-winning and growing community located west of Milwaukee, Waukesha has experienced considerable residential, commercial and employment growth. Nationally recognized as one of the “100 Best Places to Live” in the U.S., Waukesha’s downtown includes a thriving arts district, a popular farmers’ market, and a river walk. In 2020 and 2021, the City was named as one of the “Top Workplaces” by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The City seeks highly skilled public works professionals with effective communication skills as candidates for its next Director of Public Works.

 

The Director of Public Works is a key member of the City’s management team in a financially stable organization. The city maintains an AA2 bond rating from Moody’s Investor Services and has made significant strides in upgrading its facilities and infrastructure, including an aggressive road maintenance program.

 

The City seeks a high-energy, experienced, proactive public works professional to direct a broad range of services including engineering, streets (garage), clean-water utility, fleet management, transit, and parking. The ideal candidate is an innovative, collaborative thinker and ready to be an integral member of the senior management team.

 

The Director is responsible for leading a department of more than 130 full-time employees, as well as managing $13.36 million in general fund and $19.5 million in enterprise fund budgets, plus more than $ 74.5 million in five-year capital investment programming in the General Fund and $76.8 million in the Enterprise Fund. The Director reports to the City Administrator.

 

The City is seeking an ethical and experienced professional with strong technical and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate must have an inclusive managerial style, as well as clear, concise, and open communication skills.

 

Qualified candidates should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, civil engineering, or a closely related field. A related Master’s degree is desired
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, registration as a professional engineer in Wisconsin
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible positions in municipal public works, including supervisory experience
  • Well-developed skills in effective service delivery and creative problem solving; and
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills with a variety of stakeholders.

 

Starting salary range of $125,000 - $140,000 +/- DOQ, and an excellent benefit package, is offered.
